Day 15 of 40 (Mark 6:30-34)
Welcome back to 40 days with Christ, a daily scripture based encouragement from the life of our Lord Jesus. Always to the point! Always under 5 minutes in length! Lets start with a word of Prayer.
Jesus, thank you for being our guide in life. For you are the way the truth and the life! And it is in your name we pray. AMEN!
Reading from holy scripture, we’re in the 6thchapter of The Book of Mark verses 30 through34.
30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
Things were getting a little hectic. Scripture tells us that so many people were coming and going that they didn’t even have a chance to eat! So Jesus takes his apostles by boat to a solitary quiet place where they can get some rest.
I don’t know about you but the very moment I finally expect to get a little peace and quiet restfulness is not the moment I want a large crowd gathering around me! And yet Jesus sees past their inconvenience all the way deep down to their need for guidance for they were like sheep without a shepherd. Out of compassion, He teaches them many things.
A sheep without a Shepherd is probably one of the most hopelessly lost animals in the entire animal kingdom. They will quite literally follow one another in line to walk over the edge of a cliff one after another! It isn’t a flattering image to be told that we are like sheep without a Shepherd, but its a true one.
Thank God that Jesus has compassion and that he teaches us many things.
Jesus thank you for showing us your great compassion that even when you were seeking a place for quiet and rest when you saw people in need you were willing to give them what they needed all the more. Without you, we are like sheep without a shepherd. And so we ask that out of compassion for us that you will teach us too. May we listen to, learn from and follow you for you are the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. And its in your name we pray, AMEN!
Thanks so much for joining us! Have yourself a wonderful day and I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow for day 16 of our ongoing series 40 days with Christ.
